Using PowerPoint in the Classroom

About Me
I am an Elementary/Special Education teacher in Philadelphia. I have taught all subjects, but, Reading and Science my favorites. Like some teachers, I have had to overcome my math phobia. I even created a PowerPoint Presentation about it. If you want, you can download it for free! (More about that later.)

PowerPoint Presentations
PowerPoint Presentations (PPT) is a great way to include visuals into your lesson planning. It is one of my favorite ways to use differentiated instructional strategies, because it can include, visual, audio and hands on learning. I have used PPTs in a number of ways:

  1. To introduce a topic
  2. To review a topic
  3. To do a Read Aloud
  4. To play a game
  5. To encourage critical thinking
  6. To give additional instruction
  7. To isolate a skill
When I used PPTs to introduce or review a topic, I have students read the slides instead of reading the slides by myself. For Read Alouds, I use a number of methods. I might have students read selective slides, or in the case of a story, I may highlight grade level words for the students to choral read to advance the story. Students always love playing games. PPT games are great! Not only do the students have fun learning, it also provides teachable moments on the topic and on social interaction. I use PPTs for skills isolation as a way to students struggling with a particular skill that need extra practice. I have also had students create their own PowerPoint Presentations (and present them) as a way to get them engaged in the topic. I hope you will consider integrating more PPTs into your lesson planning if you have not done so already. Using your imagination, no doubt you can come up with wonderful ideas of your own!
